Donegal League: Cappry Rovers and Letterkenny Rovers win Area Cup Finals

Donegal Area Final

Cappry Rovers           2 v 0 St. Catherines

Played at Finn Valley Centre which was in excellent condition as usual, both teams created a few chances in the first half but none were converted. Nothing between the teams in the first half with both teams playing some great football. St Catherine’s came out of the blocks quicker for the second half but the Cappry defence was in superb form the whole day and dealt with anything that was thrown at them. Cappry took to the lead from a great header from Gary Wilson. St Catherine’s pushed but they couldn’t break down the Cappry rearguard and it was Gary Wilson who again popped up with a top class header to the top of the net to secure the Area Shield for Cappry. Well done to both teams and to the officials for a great entertaining game. 

Letterkenny Area Final

Swilly Rovers           1 v 2 Letterkenny Rovers

In an excellent football match between two skilled teams, Swilly took the lead on seven minutes with Shane Mc Namee’s impressive 35-yard strike. Just two minutes later, Letterkenny levelled as Lee Mc Monagle smoothly bypassed two defenders and calmly finished. Swilly dominated the first half, with Ian Ward’s effort hitting the bar and bouncing on the goal line. In the second half, Letterkenny intensified their attack, forcing Barry Gallagher in the Swilly goal to make several crucial saves. The winning goal came on 70 minutes when Nathan Plumb scored a superb header. Both teams hit the posts, and Swilly had a disallowed goal near the end. Overall, it was a thrilling match with a high standard of football that entertained the large crowd in attendance.
