GAA: Glenswilly prevail after tough Cloughaneely test

Glenswilly 0-14 v 2-06 Cloughaneely

By Charlie Collins

Goals by Darren McGeever and Shaun Maguire in the first-half kept Cloughaneely’s hopes of victory alive for a long period in this well contested championship encounter.

With four points between the teams only once in the game the result was in doubt right up the the end of injury-time in the second-half. Kealan Dunleavy and Sean Collum points gave the home team an early lead but a super goal from Darren McGeever had Cloughaneely ahead in the 10th minute.

Shane McDevitt from a free and a 45 from Michael Murphy had Glenswilly ahead again. Shaun McClafferty then denied Kealan Dunleavy with a super save and in the next two minutes Shaun Maguire converted a free and then outjumped three Glenswilly players to fist the ball to the net, Cloughaneely led by 2-01 to 0-04.

Glenswilly’s responded well with four points in a row, Sean Collum , Shane McDevitt, and two excellent Daithi Gildea scores to lead by one. Shaun Maguire pointed from play but points from Gildea and Gary McFadden had Glenswilly two ahead at the break 0-10 to 2-02.

Two Michael Murphy points and one from Jack Gallagher to a lone Ciaran Scanlon score had Glenswilly four ahead. Stand-in keeper Caolan Kelly denied Maguire another goal with a super save, Shaun McClafferty converted the 45, three in it again.

Ciaran McGeady made it a two point game to set up a exciting finish . Cormac Callaghan restored Glenswilly’s three point advantage, Shaun Maguire converted from distance but Cloughaneely’s gallant effort ran out of time as Glenswilly held on to make it two wins from two.

A worry for them will be the injury picked up by Kealan Dunleavy late in the game.
