McGeady wins first Leo Molloy title in dramatic fashion

Donegal county star Ciaran McGeady clinched the 2024 Leo Molloy Memorial title with a 7-6 win over last year’s runner up Adrian Devine in the Leo Molloy Darts tournament held in Kilcar on March 9th.

It was a brilliant finale to a fantastic day of darts and a fitting way to remember Leo.

It was an epic battle with Ciaran trailing 4-1 and 5-2 and at that stage it looked a certainty that Adrian would make up for last year’s loss to Shane McGuirk but Ciaran had other ideas hitting double 5 to win the decider where Adrian had darts to win.

A massive 117 players entered this year’s event and the darts from the off provided many great moments. McGeady had great wins on route beating fellow Ireland and Donegal team mate Andrew Gillespie 6-4 in the semi-finals and defending champion Shane McGuirk in the quarter finals where he had a 12 dart leg and there were six 180s! Adrian beat the inform Stephen Harron 6-1 in the semi-finals and Stephen Nicolson in the quarter finals, he had the highest checkout of the day with a 157 in the semi narrowly beating JP Byrnes 154.

Best youth player of the day was Daniel Cunningham and it was brilliant to see so many young players take part while Sharon Cunningham was the best lady thrower on the day.

A big thanks to all the players who entered, the checkers and markers who kept things going from the first round to the final, to John Joes and Kilcar House and staff for hosting.

To Susan and Aaron Molloy for sponsorship, Leo would be so proud to see the fantastic turnout on the 25 anniversary of his untimely passing. To Heineken Ireland, Floyds Mace Dunkineely, Kilcar Cabs, The SIM Clinic, Dineen Aviation, Tuna.ie, Edge Clothing, CLG Chill Chartha, A & J Construction for sponsorships we are very grateful for your support.

We look to next year’s event and we will start earlier and make a few changes to get things running quicker and look forward to another fantastic event!
