Mitchell McLaughlin sets sights on LA despite ‘hellish’ Paralympic finish

Drumkeen cyclist Mitchell McLaughlin described his last race of the Paralympic games as ‘hell’, but he remains hungry for more.

McLaughlin was a pilot for Waterford para cyclist Damian Vereker throughout the Paris games, which featured a national record-setting performance in the Men’s B 4000m Individual Pursuit.

Today’s men’s B road race was a gruelling 127.8km for the tandem pair as they finished in eighth place at a 3:04:18 finish time.

Vereker and McLaughlin held out in sixth place for the majority of the action under the hot midday sun.

Speaking to RTE Sport, Vereker said it was a hard race from the start, but that he couldn’t help but enjoy the Paralympics and the crowds.

McLaughlin laughed: “It was a pretty hard race and I am cooked”, but admitted that he was ‘starving for more’ and will be back in 2028.
