Football
Aodh Ruadh were back in league action after a few weeks off, with Naomh Conaill the opposition in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. They landed two early points, but a Brick Molloy goal after 14 minutes erased that good work.
The sides then swapped points over the next ten minutes to make it 0-5 to 1-2. Diarmaid McInerney (2), Darren Drummond, Senan Rooney and David Dolan were the men on the mark for the Ernesiders. In a pattern which was repeat itself at the end of the second half Glenties reeled off a quick succession of unanswered points before the break to lead by 1-5 to 0-5.
The visitors then added another two points at the start of the second half to give themselves a five point cushion, but Aodh Ruadh clawed that back with three points in a row to leave it at 0-8 to 1-7 with 37 minutes played. The Blues hit the next two points before Aodh Ruadh again left a goal between them with ten minutes remaining in the game.
The sides exchanged points once more and with seven minutes to play the tie was still in the balance. It was Glenties who pushed for the tape though and they tagged on two points to confirm the victory as it ended Aodh Ruadh 0-10 Naomh Conaill 1-12.
The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows: Nathan Boyle; Callum O’Halloran, Jason Granaghan, Senan Rooney (0-2); Michael McKenna, Darren Drummond (0-1), Niall Murray; Cian Dolan, Eamonn McGrath; Diarmaid McInerney (0-5, 4f), David Dolan (0-2), Ryan Keenaghan; Eddie Lynch, Matt Gillespie, Darragh Flood Dolan. Subs: Colm McGloin for Senan Rooney 46 minutes. We have a gallery of shots from the game live on aodhruadh.org now.
It was a tough day at the office for the reserves with a dominant Naomh Conaill outfit running out winners on a 2-7 to 5-17 scoreline.
Sunday sees Aodh Ruadh take on Malin in Connolly Park down in Inishowen with the reserve game throwing in at 1.30pm ahead of the senior clash at 3pm, with both sides chasing valuable points.
Minor training continues on Wednesday and Friday this week as preparation is in full flow for the all county championship which throws-in on Monday evening at 7.30pm in Father Tierney Park against Letterkenny Gaels. All support very much welcome.
Monday evening saw our under 16 boys returning to all-county league action away to Kilcar after a four week break. Aodh Ruadh started slowly and were 0-6 to 0-2 down after 15 minutes. The Ernesiders rallied and fired over three unanswered points to leave them only a point behind. Kilcar raided up the field though and netted a goal on the counter-attack to make it 1-9 to 0-6 as the sides turned around. The second half saw Kilcar open up an 11 point lead after another goal, however Aodh Ruadh got it back to five points with ten minutes left. The game was still there for the taking, but it was Kilcar who finished stronger and they ran out winners, 3-20 to 2-13.
Many thanks to all the stewards who were present in Father Tierney Park to help facilitate the Southern Regional Board final between Naomh Bríd and Four Masters. It was a great occasion and we have a gallery of pictures from action live now on aodhruadh.org.
Our under 15 footballers travelled to south Armagh for the Regional Féile last Saturday. We were hosted by Saint Patrick’s, Cullyhanna, the 2024 All-Ireland Intermediate Club champions. The Orchard club did a great job running the day off smoothly. Aodh Ruadh played Killeevan of Monaghan first, where our lads put in a very solid shift to win comfortably on a scoreline of 5-4 to 1-10, the goals scored by Callum Dorrian (2), Eoghan McCadden and Dara McCready and a bizarre own goal by the unfortunate Killeevan keeper. Our second game saw us face Slaughtneil of Derry. We held our own against a big team with a Dorrian penalty keeping us in the game, but the Oak Leafers finished the stronger to win out on a scoreline of 0-6 to 1-0, eventually going on to top the group with three wins from three. Our final group game was against the hosts, Saint Patrick’s, who were cheered on by a good local support. Our boys knuckled down to put some early scores of the board and maintained a lead throughout, winning on a final scoreline of 2-6 to 0-3. The two wins left us in second place behind Slaughtneil so we went on to face table toppers from the other group, Naomh Mearnog (Portmarnock) in the cup semi-final. The Dublin lads were on a different level unfortunately having strong panel of 2009 players and comfortably won out in the end and were eventual winners of the cup. All 21 players who travelled enjoyed good pitch time, with the Féile substitution rules ensuring good rotation of players and game time for all. Despite the early exit it was a very enjoyable day out, topped off with a stop in Canavan’s at Garvaghy for a well earned feed. Thanks again to our sponsors for the day and to Billy and all at Cleary’s Garage for allowing us hold our main fundraising car wash there. The Aodh Ruadh panel for the day was as follows: Alistair Cian, Alex Kerrigan, Aaron McLoone, Ethan Kerrigan, Oisin McCadden, Anthony Duffy, Eogan McCadden, Antoin Duffy, Eoghan Blakey Gallagher, Manus Conlon, Dara McCready, Jack Hassett, Dara Vaughan, MJ Ward, Callum Dorrian, Dylan Cullen, Iarla Hartin, Oisin McGrath, Micheal McGrath, John McHugh, Senan Ward, Louis Hassett. Finally thanks to the management, parents and guardians for all their work across the course of the competition.
Under 10 training continues on Tuesday evening at Coláiste Cholmcille from 7pm to 8pm. On Saturday the boys welcome Naomh Conaill to Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh for a 12 noon throw in.
The under 8 boys had a very enjoyable trip down to Naomh Columba on Saturday morning where they played two games against the hosts. Thanks to the parents for travelling! This week we are on the road again, this time to Mountcharles to face Saint Naul’s. The squad will have a break from games the following week.
Ladies
The Aodh Ruadh ladies made the trip to Leiter on Friday evening for their Division 1 meeting with Dungloe. It was to be an open and entertaining affair with the scores flowing throughout, with tenacious defending from both sides. It was first blood to the Reds a minute in, but shortly after Caoimhe Devine seized on the ball and laced to the back of the net to give Aodh Ruadh the lead. Cáit Gillespie then split the posts, but Dungloe were back on terms by the 11th minute. A minute later Gillespie pointed again to edge her side back into a lead they would retain to the final whistle. That lead was stretched five minutes later when Gillespie broke through the defence and placed her shot past the Dungloe keeper. The Reds came back with a free but a great piece of forward play by Caoimhe Devine sent Orla Keon through one on one with the keeper and she made no mistake. Dungloe came back with another free, but a point from Keon left Aodh Ruadh leading at the interval 0-6 to 3-3. Aodh Ruadh were playing up the hill in the second half and Dungloe made a threatening opening with a string of early points, a lone Gillespie point the only reply as the scoreboard read 0-9 to 3-4 with 37 minutes gone. Ballyshannon had sorted themselves defensively by this stage though and a Gillian Dufficy free quickly followed by a point for Cáit Gillespie gave Aodh Ruadh the impetus again. The tie really moved beyond Dungloe when a Gillespie effort from range squeezed over the line, Caoimhe Devine removing any doubt from the referee’s mind by booting to the net. Dungloe kept fighting though and hit 1-1 as the game moved into the final ten minutes. The Shamettes were finishing strong though and an Orla Keon point sandwiched between two gems from the indefatigable Andrea Moore kept clear distance between the sides as the clock ran down. Dungloe did hit a late 1-1, but it was job done for Aodh Ruadh as it finished Aodh Ruadh 4-10 Dungloe 2-12. A doughty team effort from the visitors got the points here. Young Katie McGowan is really looking the part in senior football, while Caitlin McGarrigle was back to her best before having to leave the fray. Orla Keon made light of her long trip from Dublin to play a pivotal role alongside the magnificent Annalisa Rabbitte. Up front Cáit Gillespie caused endless problems, while Gillian Dufficy and Caoimhe Devine supplied a lethal attacking edge. The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows: Roisín Maguire, Katie McGowan, Roisin McGloin, Niamh Barrett; Aoibhinn McGarrigle, Caitlin McGarrigle, Sara Gallagher; Orla Keon (1-2), Annalisa Rabbitte; Andrea Moore (0-2), Cáit Gillespie (2-4), Lauren Foy; Gillian Dufficy (0-2), Caoimhe Devine (1-0), Anna Rafferty. Subs: Ciara Larkin, Elaine Dorrian, Fiona McGonigle, Emer O’Brien, Megan Murphy, Eimear McDevitt.
On Sunday morning the Division 3 ladies made it double joy as they got the better of MacCumhaill’s in Father Tierney Park. There was a steady breeze coming in from the sea and the hosts had it at their backs for the first half. They won a free seven minutes in which Cadhla Dolan slipped over to give her side a lead they would hold to the end. The game was into the second quarter before the next score arrived, this one another silky effort from Dolan. A couple of minutes later she had her hattrick with another free. Ten minutes from the break the Shamettes raised the green flag for the first time. MacCumhaill’s just couldn’t clear their lines and Caitlyn Gallagher finally stepped up to slam to the net. That sparked the visitors to life and they hit a quick 1-1, but a point from Cadhla Dolan helped steady the Ballyshannon ship. MacCumhaill’s were in a purple patch though and two more points followed as half time beckoned. Just before the interval however, Aodh Ruadh raided for a big score. The ball was dropped into the square and Amanda Mahon nipped in to flick to the net to leave it at 2-4 to 1-3 at the turn-around. Aodh Ruadh had a big task in front of them in the second half as they turned to face the elements in the second half, but they got off to a great start with Cadhla Dolan sending over a super point. Three minutes later Terri Gallagher added a goal which was quickly followed by a deserved score for Caoimhe Devine. The Ballybofey girls rallied with a couple of points, but their cause was fatally holed when Ciara Larkin struck for two goals in the space of five minutes midway through the half. The visitors did add three further points over the remaining 15 minutes, but these were cancelled out by Larkin’s hattrick goal. It finished Aodh Ruadh 6-8 MacCumhaill’s 2-7 to draw the curtain down on the Ballyshannon girls league in style and set them up well for a championship tilt. It was a great team performance from every single one of the 19 players who lined out and bodes well for the coming championship tests. Hannah Doherty and Shauna Dolan were really solid in the back line, with Fiona McGonigle keeping the ball flowing through the middle third. Up front Caitlyn Gallagher did really well from open play as well as taking an important goal, while it was great to see Dearbhla O’Moore back making some telling contributions. The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows: Katie McGowan; Hannah Doherty, Shauna Dolan, Megan Murphy; Kyra McNulty, Eimear McDevitt, Aoife Bromley; Fiona McGonigle, Ciara Larkin (3-0); Caoimhe Devine (0-1), Caitlyn Gallagher (1-0), Katie Gallagher, Amanda Mahon (1-0), Cadhla Dolan (0-6). Subs: Dearbhla O’Moore, Anna Rafferty, Terri Gallagher (1-0), Aodhbha O’Donnell, Sophia Mulligan, Laoise Foy. Head along to aodhruadh.org where we have a great gallery of pictures.
Good luck to the minors who will get their season next week in Father Tierney Park this Tuesday at 7pm against Naomh Columba.
The Aodh Ruadh under 15 girls were in Féile action in Tyrone over the course of Saturday. Their opening games was against Breffni representatives, Kingscourt Stars. The Cavan girls were a big strong physical outfit and with not much in the contest goals were big scores. Aodh Ruadh got one following great work between Laoise Foy and Rachel Gillespie, but Kingscourt bagged one of their own and it finished honours even at 1-3 apiece. The next game was against Irvinestown and proved a real rollercoaster of a game. The Fermanagh ladies came out all guns blazing and scampered off into a six point lead. The Shamettes dug deep though and a superb goal in the dying moments by Laoise Foy gave her side a memorable two point win as it finished 3-5 to 3-3. The last game of the group stages was a novel pairing with the Ernesiders facing off against a Scotland side with a pick of 5.5 million. Aodh Ruadh made light of the odds and with Caitlin McGuinness outstanding in defence, Faye Gillespie, Cadhla Gillespie, Laoise Foy and Rachel Gillespie all raised green flags as Ballyshannon clinched an 8-8 to 0-0 victory. Aodh Ruadh now faced Watty Graham’s Glen Maghera in the Cup semi-final. This one was sizing up for a great battle with Aodh Ruadh answering an early Glen goal with one of their own. However, at that point a clash saw Rachel Gillespie sustaining a broken arm. Obviously that shock had a major impact on the Ballyshannon girls and by the break they were well in arrears. However they did respond well to win the second half, but it wasn’t enough to reel in the Derry girls. That brought down the curtain down on a great day of football action for the girls. We extend our best wishes for a speedy recovery to Rachel Gillespie, one of the hardiest warriors on the squad. Many thanks to the management, parents guardians and supporters who were behind the team all the way.
