Schools nominations for the Donegal Sports Star Awards are set to close next week, with nine categories available to vote in.
Next Friday the 27th of October is the closing date for receipt of schools nominations for the Donegal Sports Star Awards. There are nine categories so it is important now that schools gets their nominations in with the deadline looming. Donegal County Council are the exclusive sponsors once again and it was in 1979 that the Local Authority came on board first to support the secondary schools awards. Primary School awards were introduced in the late 1980s. The deadline for all other non-school nominations is the later date of Friday 24th of November.
The winners of the Best Secondary Sports Girl and Boy in the inaugural year of 1979 were Michelle Morrow, Ballyshannon and Gerard McGinley, St. Eunan’s College, Letterkenny. Morrow and McGinley had both excelled in athletics. St. Eunan’s also won the Best Secondary School category after being crowned All-Ireland Senior soccer champions for the first time. Fr. Seán O’Gallchóir took the Secondary School Best Sports Teacher for his successes with Falcarragh Community School.

Primary School (Large >100) Scoil Naomh Bríd Muff; Primary School Sports Teacher, Eilís McClafferty, Scoil Cholmcille, Leitir Ceanainn; Secondary School, Scoil Mhuire Buncrana and Secondary School Sports Teacher, Michael Kelly, St. Eunan’s College, Letterkenny.
